Spokes on a Wheel

We all need connection.  We need connection with nature, connection with others, connection with God… and the list goes on.  When connections get broken, we may not notice the impact immediately, but it is there and grows over time.

In “Canoeing The Mountains”, Tod Bolsinger writes “Most people connect to the church like spokes on a wheel: everybody is connected to the whole through one or two points of contact.  When church members have children in the kids or youth program, are settled in a small group or feel connected to a particular pastor or ministry, all is well.  We are a stronger community of faith for people who are into a routine and rhythm of life.  But when life changes, or when the church undergoes a change (like a higher amount of staff turnover…), the ties that bind people together and to the church are loosened or detached completely.  And even harder to detect is that it doesn’t happen immediately but occurs over about a year’s time.”

We’ve been talking so much about Watch Parties around Mission lately because we believe in connections.  We believe that the connections that you have with those in your lives are the best tools to bring that person to Find and Follow Christ.  Inviting that neighbor to your yard or garage for an evening has a whole different context and feel than inviting them to a building.  They know you.  They trust you. They feel connected to you.  The spoke to the wheel is already there.

This is also a great time to take notice of those who may have become “disconnected”.  How often do people disappear off of our radars, and before we realize they are missing, a month, two months, a year has gone by.  Friends, let’s not let the fact escape us that EVERY relationship in our lives is an opportunity to show love.  Every relationship is an opportunity to share Jesus.  Let’s not let any of those disappear.  Who might you need to call or text today to say, “Hey, I haven’t seen you in a while.  I’ve noticed - and I’ve missed you.  How are you?  I care.  Jesus cares.”

Evaluate the spokes of your wheel.
