Change

Change.  Change can be hard.  Some of our personalities love it and are energized by it, but MOST of us hate it.  It feels uncomfortable.  It feels scary.  It doesn’t feel safe.  For many of us, change produces anxiety.  Change is, however, essential to adapt to a changing world.

The first step to embracing and creating change is understanding the NEED for change, and helping others to do the same.  If the NEED is not understood and embraced, the process will likely not be either.  A sense of urgency is essential in order to bring about change.  So why is this so hard?

John Kotter writes “Instead of patiently waiting for a widespread and true urgency, most leaders settle for the false urgency of attending to the most urgent issue or the one that has the most people in an uproar.  Whenever the urgent pushes out the important, we fall into the trap of feeling as if we are busy accomplishing something while we are running on a treadmill - getting exhausted but not going anywhere.”

We have to be aware of our own anxieties, and to not allow them to hinder progress. In “Canoeing the Mountains”, Tod Bolsinger reiterates “For leaders, the point of calming down is not to feel better; it’s to make better decisions. It’s to make the best decisions for furthering the mission.”

So let’s reflect back to last Friday’s lesson - “Mission trumps”.  Every time.  What is our mission?  Every change should focus on fulfilling that mission… each and every time.
